I have travelled to Myanmar many times. It was very interesting to hear the perspective of an expat who lived there during that period of time as opposed to my experiences as a tourist. My first visit was in 1999 so I saw amazing changes between then and my last visit in 2016. So many things made me laugh as I read her account of daily life and the quirky.things.that make it a truly unique country. I am so sad to see what is happening there now. My heart and prayers are with the people there that have become my very dear friends. Both an accessible introduction to Myanmar and a candid look at establishing yourself in journalism in a developing country. The author is likeable and writes with a lot of honesty. She was lucky with her timing; those four years, 2012-2016, were good ones to be in the country - lots of positive change and potential. And she certainly packed a lot into them, working at an independent paper, a state-run paper, freelancing, and the British embassy. It makes for compelling reading, and I had trouble putting it down.
