Ebook About “Wonderfully, in Akashic’s Oakland Noir, the stereotypes about the city suffer the fate of your average noir character—they die brutally.” —San Francisco Chronicle In the wake of San Francisco Noir, Los Angeles Noir, and Orange County Noir—all popular volumes in the Akashic Noir Series—comes the latest California installment, Oakland Noir. Masterfully curated by Jerry Thompson and Eddie Muller (the “Czar of Noir”), this volume will shock, titillate, provoke, and entertain. The diverse cast of talented contributors will not disappoint. Oakland Noir offers stories by Nick Petrulakis, Kim Addonizio, Keenan Norris, Keri Miki-Lani Schroeder, Katie Gilmartin, Dorothy Lazard, Harry Louis Williams II, Carolyn Alexander, Phil Canalin, Judy Juanita, Jamie DeWolf, Nayomi Munaweera, Mahmud Rahman, Tom McElravey, Joe Loya, and Eddie Muller. “From the Oakland hills to the heart of downtown, each story brings Oakland to life.” —San Jose Mercury News “Oakland is a natural for the series, with its shadowy crimes and disgruntled cops.” —Zoom Street Magazine “San Francisco’s grittier next-door neighbor gets her day in the sun in 16 new stories in this tightly curated entry in Akashic’s Noir series. The hardscrabble streets of Oakland offer crime aplenty . . . Thompson and Muller have taken such pains to choose stories highlighting Oakland’s diversity and history that the result is a volume rich in local culture as well as crime.” —Kirkus ReviewsBook Oakland Noir (Akashic Noir) Review :
I was interested in this book because Eddie Muller was involved in the editing and had a story in it. (Alameda! When was a noir story set in Alameda? Or any story?) To be fair, I was also interested because Akashic published some of my work. And I'm from the Bay Area and lived in Oakland when I was going to Berkeley. From a writer's point of view, I think Oakland is filthy with great literary potential. Before I got into the book, I looked over the bios of the the writers. On first blush I thought: "Is there anybody that can write in Oakland except librarians?" And this compilation of short stories - dark, noir? - is a little mundane, tame, librarian, maybe dark tan, not indigo. Some of the work is quite good. Keri Miki-Lani Schroeder's lesbian murder mystery set in - on - Piedmont Avenue is a very skillfully-written piece. It captures the mood, the atmosphere of that street in a very convincing way and the story is nicely paced, not a cliche in sight, violent, and refreshingly unpredictable. I liked Eddie Muller's story. I used to look at Alameda across that leaden swath of water - the Alameda Estuary - that pours into the bay, from the badlands of Jack London Square when it was a produce market and not a tourist trap. The story is very real, and again, quite atmospheric in a Victorian sort of way. Interested in this book? Oakland Noir? Read the much older Akashic book - San Francisco Noir - with a great lesbian story by Michelle Tea, set in Bernal Heights, before she was...?...Michelle Tea! "Oakland Noir" is a mixed bag. The 16 contemporary noir stories in this collection are written from a variety of viewpoints, and well represent some of the diversity in the city of Oakland. Unfortunately, the writing quality also varies - perhaps a bit too much. While most of the stories are pretty good and two or three actually approach "great," there are also two or three pieces that miss the mark in terms of basic idea or execution.I also thought some of the stories were better than others at evoking the atmosphere of Oakland. I've lived in Oakland for almost 20 years, so I think I get to judge "Oakland atmosphere." Most of the stories got the geography of Oakland right. Some even got the history right. But only a few of the stories were able to capture the heart and soul and feeling of Oakland. And none of the authors hit the levels of peak Raymond Chandler or Walter Mosley when it comes to evoking a specific time and place. If you enjoy noir fiction or stories set in Oakland, this book is definitely worth checking out. But if you are familiar with the long interesting history of Oakland, or have read enough noir-edged novels and short stories, you will sense some missed opportunities in this collection.
